PIPELINE

Capacity: The pipeline can import up to 25.5 billion cubic metres of gas per annum, enough to supply 17 million homes, from Continental Europe to the UK. It can also supply 20 billion cubic metres of gas per annum when in UK export mode.

Length: 230 km (145 miles)

Diameter: 40 inches (1016 mm)



TERMINALS

Compressors: Four gas compressors are sited at the Bacton terminal to pump the gas through the line to Zeebrugge. Each compressor is powered by a 30 MW gas generator similar to a jet engine on a Boeing 747.

There are four electrically driven compressors at Zeebrugge. Each compressor is rated at 35MW.

Pressure: Gas is compressed to around 140 bar, about 62 times the pressure of a car tyre.



COMPANY

Turnover: The turnover for gas year ending 2005 was £94 million.

Staff: The company employs approximately 60 permanent staff with a further 20 engaged in project development and short term activities.

FLOWS

Forward flow record: The highest daily forward flow (export mode to Europe) was 631 GWh (equivalent to 19.8 bcm/y) on 29th April 2003.

Reverse flow record: The highest recorded daily reverse flow (import mode to UK) was 511 GWh (equivalent to 16.4 bcm/y) on 22nd February 2006.
