ZEEBRUGGE TERMINAL

LOCATION

Zeebrugge in Belgium is a gas transportation hub on the European mainland. The Interconnector Zeebrugge terminal is a stand alone site located in a light industrial area, the Transportzone.

OPERATION

The Zeebrugge terminal is operated by a team who provide 24-hour control of the plant for optimum efficiency in delivering the nominated gas flow. Maintenance of the terminal facilities is carried out by a dedicated team provided by Fluxys, the local gas transmission system operator, who is also responsible for the inspection and running maintenance of the Belgian onshore pipeline.

FACILITIES

The original facilities comprised:

• Heating trains to maintain the gas temperature above 2ºC

• Pressure and flow regulators
• Control room
• 50 mm filter with standby


The Zeebrugge terminal has been upgraded to enable enhanced reverse flows as part of the Zeebrugge Compression Project. The new facilities, designed by E.ON Engineering, comprise:

• Four compressor packages, each with a Siemens VSD electric motor driving a Rolls Royce centrifugal compressor
• Aftercoolers incorporating electrically driven fans
• A vent stack for terminal depressurisation.
